Way back in November 2021, during the Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant Super-Middleweight unification bout Jermell Charlo boldly claimed “I can beat Canelo”.

Coming into the fight Canelo had questions surrounding how much he still had left. He is only 33 years old, but with 63 fights under his belt, many felt the wear and tear was starting to take its toll.  You add in 2 out of his last 3 fights he was dominated by Dmitry Bivol and put on an underwhelming showing against overmatched John Ryder.

Maybe these recent events gave Charlo reason to believe he could pull off the upset. They are the same age but Charlo has twenty-five (25) fewer fights making him the fresher fighter of the two. He was also ranked number 10 in the pound-for-pound rankings and is the current undisputed light-middleweight champion of the world. Now he was making the jump out two-weight classes, but him being a big light middleweight many thought the weight difference would not play such a significant role.

Whatever version of Canelo Jermell saw that night in November, was not the same version that stepped into the ring on Saturday night. Canelo was motivated, healthy, and looked like the fighter who was the consensus #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport for many years. Charlo seemed as if he was content to arrive, collect a paycheck, and leave. He made no real attempts to win the fight. Canelo stalked him all night trying to get him to engage, and Charlo simply would not. There was a brief moment of excitement in the 7th round when a quick combination put Charlo down for only the second time in his career. Charlo rose to his feet quickly and went back into survival mode.

Canelo ended the fighting landing 134 of 385 punches, while Charlo landed only 71 of 398. The final judge’s scorecards read 119-108, 118-109, 118-109 all for Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2 39KOs). With the win, Canelo retained his WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO & Ring Super-Middleweight championships. Charlo loses for only the second time in his career taking his record to (35-2-1, 19KOs).
