2021 seems to be the year where Hall of Fame boxers come out of retirement for one last hurrah. Posted earlier today on Twitter, Miguel Cotto released a promo video earlier today referencing the famous Mexican vs. Puerto Rican boxing rivalry. Near the end of the clip, we see none other than Juan Manuel Marquez.
Cotto (41-6, 33KO’s) is a four-division champion that had a career that spanned 17 years. He competed at junior welterweight, welterweight, junior middleweight, and middleweight, the last fight taking place in 2017 losing to Sadam Ali by unanimous decision. Cotto has a Hall of Fame resume, and although he did not get in during his first year of eligibility will certainly be enshrined in the future.
Marquez (56-7, 40KO’s) is also a four-division champion, picking up titles in the featherweight, super-featherweight, lightweight, and junior welterweight divisions. He is most notably known for his 4-fight war with Manny Pacquiao. He picked up his career-defining victory in their final bout, knocking Pacquiao out cold in six rounds. Marquez was elected to the IBHOF in 2020, and last fought back in 2014 soundly outpointing Mike Alvarado by unanimous decision.
No location or date has been confirmed yet, but June looks to be the target with Miami as a possible location.
