As reported earlier, all roads seemed to point towards a Garcia vs. Pacquiao showdown. It just appears that we had the wrong Garcia.
Ryan Garcia was the front runner at the top of the year, but then news seemed to go cold, and we heard no new information. Ryan Garcia admitted that the talks of the fight had broken down, and the fight became dead in the water.
Pacquiao had also mentioned Terence Crawford as a possible opponent, but his financial demands may prove to be too steep.
Enter Mikey Garcia. This is a fight that has been bounced around for the last few years, but now it’s closer to being a reality than ever before. Pacquiao still has yet to return to the ring since dispatching Keith Thurman in 2019. Winning that bout added the WBA (Super) Welterweight championship to Manny’s collection. Unfortunately, due to the long layoff between fights, he was stripped of his title earlier this year.
Garcia has fought more recently, but that isn’t saying much. His last fight was in February of 2020 where he won a convincing unanimous decision over Jessie Vargas. The fight would most likely take place in May, with location and judges to be determined once the fight is finalized.
