It looks as if Canelo Alvarez (54-1-2, 36KOs) is making Super Middleweight his home. The top pound for pound fighter in the sport is the current WBA/WBC titlist after defeating Callum Smith in December of 2020.
B.J. Saunders (30-0, 14KOs) is the WBO champion and in his last fight defended his championship against Martin Murray, which was also in December.
While the fight is not officially signed, both Alvarez and Saunders have agreed conditionally to a 3 title unification bout in May. Provided that Canelo wins his mandatory title defense against Avvni Yildrim on February 27. Alvarez could have vacated the title in lieu of making defense, but opted for a quick turnaround choosing to remain active.
Alvarez and Saunders were in agreement to fight May 2, 2020, but that fight was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
While nothing is concrete at the moment, it looks as if the fight will take place around Cinco De Mayo as first reported by Mike Coppinger of The Athletic. Allegiant Stadium, the brand new stadium belonging to the Las Vegas Raiders, looks to be the target venue to host the bout. That is contingent upon large gatherings being allowed by May.
Should large gatherings still be not allowed, Florida and Texas could become landing spots.
