Just a couple of weeks into the New Year and boxing is on the verge of delivering our first mega fight of 2021 in Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua.
While nothing is official, it seems that any obstacles holding the fight up are being resolved and resolved quickly. Fury himself seems to think the fight is on the verge of being announced as he posted via his Twitter account,
“Tyson Fury, the Gypsy King. the heavyweight champion of the world — YES! — just got off the phone from Sugar Hill Steward in America. We’re gonna smash AJ! One round, two rounds, three rounds, done! Can’t wait.”
The largest roadblock that could have derailed the fight was WBO Championship number one contender and mandatory challenger, Oleksandr Usyk. The WBO has been in contact with Usyk regarding a step aside offer as well as an offer to fight Joe Joyce for an interim heavyweight title. Former WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder was penciled in with a third fight with Fury.
It does not seem as if that prior arrangement will have any bearing on the title bout. There are other logistical items that need to be ironed out, most notably a date, venue, and purses. Those seem to be mere formalities at this stage however, but keep your eyes open and we will keep you updated.
